Hoboken is a mile square that punches way above its size. It is one of the most walkable places in the whole metro area, with a real Main Street on Washington Street, the waterfront on one side, and Manhattan sitting right across the water. If you want city energy without the city’s price tag or square-footage tax, this is the place a lot of people land, and stay.

How is the commute from Hoboken?

This is usually the first question, and the answer is good. The PATH train runs from the Hoboken Terminal into the World Trade Center and up the Sixth Avenue line, and it is often a faster door-to-door trip than crossing town within Manhattan itself. The NY Waterway ferry glides you to Midtown or Downtown with a skyline view, and buses and light rail fill in the rest. Most of Hoboken is a walk or a short hop from a train, which is a big part of why homes here hold their value.

What kind of homes will I find?

Two main flavors. There are the classic brownstones and row houses on the tree-lined side streets, full of character, sometimes split into units. And there are the condos, everything from converted walk-ups to full-service elevator buildings near the water with gyms and roof decks. Parking is the honest catch, so if you own a car, ask about a deeded spot or a garage early, because it changes both price and daily life.

Is Hoboken a good place to live?

If you like being able to walk to dinner, the gym, the park, and the train, yes. It is dense in the best way, with restaurants and coffee shops on nearly every block, real waterfront parks, and a strong community feel for a place this close to New York. It draws young professionals, couples, and plenty of families who decide they want the walkability without the Manhattan rent.
